The ASTHO Leadership Institute (ALI) offers leadership development opportunities for state and territorial health officials at every stage of their tenure.

Our flagship program works with experts in executive leadership development, nationally recognized public health leaders, and ASTHO alumni to offer a customized learning program for governmental public health leaders. The program includes opportunities for:

  • self-assessment,
  • development of knowledge and skills through intensive retreats,
  • access to a learning management system with on-demand content,
  • executive coaching,
  • access to thought leaders and peer-to-peer learning,
  • and networking opportunities.

ALI Events and Benefits

Insight and Inspiration

ASTHO hosts thought leaders, authors, and strategic thinkers to share insights and inspire public health leaders amid the COVID-19 response.

The virtual sessions are open to public health professionals at the local, state, or federal levels seeking encouragement and support amid our national public health response.

Washington Week

State and territorial health officials convene in Washington, D.C. annually for an exciting week dedicated to establishing and strengthening state and federal relationships.

The event features training and leadership development opportunities focused on leading in government. It also features opportunities for health officials to meet with Congressional members and their staff, and engage in leadership discussions with key administration members.

Winter Leadership Retreat

The ASTHO Winter Leadership Retreat allows state and territorial health officials to gather in closed session for leadership strategy and peer networking with a self-care focus.

This event is designed to inspire and reinvigorate executive leaders as they prepare themselves and their agencies for a new year.

Policy Summit and Fall Leadership Meeting

The ASTHO Policy Summit and Fall Leadership Meeting provides a unique opportunity to state and territorial health officials to discuss current public health challenges together as well as think critically with and be inspired by experts in the field.

The program includes policy committee meetings, peer networking opportunities, leader-to-leader roundtables with key partners, and strategy development sessions.

Intensive Summer Leadership Summit

Newly appointed health officials gather for rigorous on-site sessions to hone their skillset, mindset, and toolset around core competencies and leadership practices. These sessions offer an intimate setting for executive leaders to learn from experts in leadership development, nationally recognized thought leaders, ASTHO Alumni, and one another.

Individual Executive Coaching

Our program matches participants with an executive coach to guide them through the program, expand on their individual assessment data, and provide insight for specific leadership challenges they face as governmental public health officials.

On-Demand Learning Modules

Our learning management system provides health officials and their executive leadership teams with continuous access to curated learning modules, articles, tools, podcasts, videos, and blogs on relevant leadership topics.
